Yes, racism. It's time to talk about how racism is coloring the presidential election. But this time, let's not talk about what the media loves to talk about: how or if whites in one category or another are leery of voting for a black man. Let's talk about the 800-pound gorilla in the room: black voters.
A new Zogby poll shows McCain favored over Obama by five points, with support for Obama in steady decline in nearly every polling category:
The dip in support for Obama, who would be the first black U.S. president, cut across demographic and ideological lines. He slipped among Catholics, born-again Christians, women, independents and younger voters. He retained the support of more than 90 percent of black voters.
Why isn't anyone talking about the manifest racism of 9 out of every 10 blacks saying they'll vote for Obama? It's no more--and no less--racist than to parse how various segments of white voters feel about electing a black man. Arguably, it's even more racist, since the only characteristic that cuts across all demography and ideology is race, and blacks--of all persuasions--continue to support Obama almost universally. Do they know something else about his character or politics than the rest of us? If so, do tell.
The media will never talk about this even as it stares them in the face. It's the most telling stat out of this recent Zogby poll and the only one that won't get dissected to death by the political punditry. To even question the black vote--especially with regards to a black candidate--is viewed by the MSM as heresy. It violates their loud, but unspoken investment in Obama as the Great Black Hope. They're scared to death to even bring it up. Someone please get Geraldine Ferraro on the line.
Obama wants desperately to present himself as the candidate who uniquely transcends race. Pretty hard to do when racism within the black community is on display so blatantly.
